Drains for Elevated Deck Applications

Reliable, Leak-Resistant Drainage Solutions

Proper drainage on elevated decks is essential for preventing leaks, structural damage, and costly repairs. Without the right design and installation techniques, water can seep through concrete slabs, causing damage to the floors below. Swiftdrain offers engineered trench drain and floor drain solutions that ensure effective water management while maintaining structural integrit

Challenges of Elevated Deck Drainage

Drains placed in elevated slabs are prone to leakage due to improper installation, poor materialselection, and insufficientwaterproofing. Successful drainage systems in elevated applicationsrequire careful design, attention to detail, and the right combination of components to preventwater intrusion.

Design Approaches for Elevated Deck Drainage

1. Composite Slab Construction-Multi-Layer Protection

Composite slabs offer the most reliable solution for elevated drainage. This system includes:

A structural slab, followed by a water proofing membrane and an optional capillary layer for enhanced drainage.

A topping slab that protects the water proofing layer from traffic and wear

A trench drain with a membrane clamping collar installed at the same level as theater proofing membrane. This prevents leaks by allowing water to weep into the drain before building up pressure.

Optional gravel placement around weep holes to prevent clogging during concrete installation

By integrating these elements, the composite slab system provides long-term durability with minimal risk of leaks

2A. Simple Slab Construction-New Installations

In some cases, elevated decks consist of a single concrete layer without a dedicated water proofing membrane. While not ideal for wet environments, this method can be used with proper precautions:

The drain must haveweep holesand awaterproofing collarat mid-depth to channelwater away.

Swell stop material, such as Cetco RX101, should be placed beneath the waterproofing collar to prevent water migration.

Drain placements should be positioned at high points in the slab whenever possible to reduce standing water accumulation

This approach requires meticulous sealing and reinforcement to reduce the risk of leaks overtime.

The slab surface must be treated with a water proofing rein to limit water penetration through cracks and porous concrete

2B. Simple Slab Retro fit Drains

For retrofitting a drain into an existing elevated slab, additional considerations must be made:

For retrofitting a drain into an existing elevated slab, additional considerations must be made:

The installation location must allow for proper drainage without interfering with structural beams or equipment below.

The drain and perimeter cut should be waterproofed using swell stop material to prevent leaks.

The structural slab should be doweled to the new drain using reinforced bars and epoxy anchors, such as Hilti HIT500, to prevent movement.

Proper formwork and bracing must be in place to support the concrete until it reaches full strength, typically7 to 14 days depending on the mix design
